Choosing the Ideal Installation Site for Your Prefab Metal Barn

Everyone loves designing a prefab metal barn, it’s the best part of the entire process! But it’s important that you also focus your attention on where you’ll be having the barn installed once it’s ready. Poor site location can cause a number of issues down the road, including causing structural integrity problems. In the worst-case scenario, it could also result in having to take your structure down and start from scratch again.

There Are a Few Things to Keep in Mind About Your Steel Barn Location

In order for you to avoid the worst case scenarios, you need to spend more time on finding the ideal site location to install your prefab steel barn. To help you make the right decision, here are a few things you will need to keep in mind.

  • Drainage - What does the area look like after a heavy rain or after all the snow melts away? If it appears to be a flooded, muddy mess for days on end, you might need to consider a new location. By having a good drainage system for the installation site of your barn, you can prevent water from collecting around the foundation of your structure. It will also prevent the unit from flooding, allowing your livestock, feed, equipment and other pieces of property to remain safe and secure.
  • Ground Selection- This tip ties into the one listed above, drainage. Water runs from higher elevations to lower elevations; therefore, you’ll want your steel barn to be placed on higher ground. If your area has a mild climate, the higher the elevation of your site, the better.
  • Location- In addition to the drainage and elevation of your site, you should also consider the convenience of the location. If you are constantly hauling and delivering products such as animals, feed and equipment, it will be easier to choose a metal barn location closer to roads. On the other hand, if you’re in charge of feeding, watering and taking care of the health of your animals, you may want to consider placing the unit close to your home. Nevertheless, the shorter the distance between two points is important.
  • Proximity to Utilities- While it’s nice to hear our grandparents talk about feeding their animals by lantern light and walking miles to a water pump, you should consider using modern day advantages. These advantages include running water and electricity. The closer you have your steel barn placed to utility lines, the more affordable and easier it will be to run those utilities to your structure.
  • Security- As a farmer or a rancher, your livestock and farming equipment are some of your most valuable assets. And while you’ll want your barn to be visible from your home, you should also be aware of who else can see the barn. If you can’t choose a location that is only visible from your home, you should consider investing in a high-quality security system.
  • Climatic Conditions- Each area in the county has its own climate changes and challenges, so it’s important that your site location should accommodate that. If you reside in a warmer area, you should take shading and airflow into consideration. For cooler climates, take advantage of all the sun exposure possible. To put things simply, you should choose a location that provides a year-round, balanced climate for your animals.
